Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS)

Diploma in Nautical Science is a 1-year course (2 Semesters) followed by compulsory one and half year (3 Semesters) on- board ship training that provides students with the basic knowledge and skills required to work as deck cadets in the merchant navy. The course is designed to give students a solid foundation in nautical science and prepares them for a career in the shipping industry.

Duration: 1 Year (Full Time) + 18 months on board ship training.

After completion of the on-board training, the Sixth Semester constitutes “OICNW Certificate of Competency” awarded by the Directorate General of Shipping and leads to simultaneous award of B.Sc. (Nautical Science) degree.

The course curriculum covers a range of topics related to shipping and nautical science, including navigation, ship stability, meteorology, cargo handling, ship construction, communication, maritime law, and marine pollution prevention. Students will also receive training in firefighting, first aid, survival at sea, and other essential skills.

After the course, students will be required to undergo mandatory 18 months practical training on board ships, which will enable them to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of ship operations, including navigation, cargo handling, and maintenance.

Academic:
  1. Pass in 12th standard or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics & English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less 60%.
  2. The candidate must have secured minimum 50% mark in English Language in 10th or 12th standard exam.

Note:

  1. The candidate must have passed the 10th and 12th standard from a recognised board.

OR

  1. B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as an individual subject in one of the years, with an average of not less than 55% of marks in the final year.
  2. The candidate must have secured minimum 50% marks in English language in 10th & 12th standard exam.

Note:

  1. The candidate must have passed the 10th standard from a recognised board.

OR

  1. BE/ BTech Degree from IIT or from a college recognised by AICTE with an average of not less than 50% of marks in the final year.
  2. The candidate must have secured minimum 50% marks in English language in 10th & 12th standard or in the degree course conducted by a recognised board or any University.

Note:

Graduates of this course can expect to have a challenging and rewarding career that offers excellent opportunities for growth and advancement in the marine sector leading to STCW A- II/2 Chief Mates/ Masters CoC on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more, and they may also pursue further higher education in the field of nautical science, maritime studies and maritime law, such as MSc, MBA and LLM.
